“Baja Air & Sea” immediately transports the reader into another world from its opening scene on La Capitana sailing The Sea of Cortez. A world of luxury, yachts, adventure, wealth, politics, and betrayal is described as if I was experiencing the story’s events myself. The intimate portrait of protagonist, Julian Mayorca, and everybody else he works with and meets on his journey, sucked me in and left me thinking of its characters even after I finished reading. I felt as if I knew these people personally. Zazueta does a great job of telling an exciting story that tied up all loose ends, yet left me wanting more at the conclusion. The imagery is descriptive and arousing to the senses. Though I’ve never been sailing, I could understand the terminology used. I personally enjoyed the author’s use of music throughout the novel to set the mood. Artists mentioned range from Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles, Gypsy Kings, Michael Jackson, and more. Zazueta also employs foreshadowing subtly and skillfully. He knows how to give you enough to keep you hooked. The language is concise and provides a clear picture of what is happening. No word is wasted. The twists and turns kept me intrigued and I only took breaks from reading because my duties required me to.The themes of adventure, exploration, the nature of man, religion, spirituality, love, lust, greed, corruption, betrayal, friendship, family, are all touched on. Julian Mayorca and his companions live lives that inspired me and sparked my imagination. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to add excitement and inspiration to their life. It was a great escape and I enjoyed start to finish.
